Overthinking: Help with Hypnosis

If you're struggling with overthinking, you'll know just how exhausting it can be.

It doesn't have to be anything important. Something coming up at work, a small task you've been asked to do, even a social event you're looking forward to. Your mind starts working overtime and the what-ifs kick in. What if something goes wrong? What if I make a mistake? What if I let someone down?

Before you know it, something fairly simple has become enormous in your mind.

“I hadn't had a decent night's sleep in 2 years … I can now finally sleep. I feel normal again and I am back to myself.”
– Philip Ryan, Co. Limerick

Clem Kelleher, Clinical Hypnotherapist and Psychologist (MSc Psychology). In person in Limerick, or online wherever you are.

Does this sound like you?

  • Small things grow into big worries in your head
  • You go back over things that already happened, and they get worse each time
  • The quiet times are the hardest, like lying in bed or a day off
  • You either put things off, or take on far too much

You know you're overthinking. You just can't stop.

When overthinking becomes a problem, people are often slow to look for help. You've probably already thought about it, and you can't imagine what anyone could tell you that would change things.

And you might be right. If you try counselling or CBT, you'll often be given techniques and strategies to help you stop overthinking. But now you've got even more things to think about.

You can't think your way out of an overthinking problem.

What I do differently

Think of overthinking as a kind of fear response. Something has triggered it. Imagine something moving beneath the surface, creating all those waves of overthinking.

Using a mixture of hypnosis and behavioural change techniques, I work on what's going on beneath the surface and calm the turbulence that's giving rise to those waves. When that happens, the overthinking can stop being a problem.

You won't be handed a list of strategies to remember. You sit back, and I guide you.

I'm a clinical hypnotherapist and psychologist (MSc Psychology), and I've worked with overthinking and anxiety since 2010.

Questions people ask

My mind never switches off. Can I even be hypnotised?

Yes. You don't need to empty your mind for hypnosis to work, and thoughts drifting in and out is completely normal. Many overthinkers are surprised by how easily they settle once they stop trying to.

Will I be in control during hypnosis?

Yes. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention, a bit like being absorbed in a film. You hear everything, you remember it, and you can stop at any point.

Can I do this online?

Yes. Online and in-person sessions work the same way, wherever you are. I'll send you simple instructions for setting up at home.

You don't need to have it all worked out.

Just send me a message on WhatsApp, even the one word "overthinking", and I'll take it from there. I reply myself.
