Quit Vaping: Help with Hypnosis

Vaping can be a lot stickier than smoking.

Maybe you took it up the way people take up any habit. Or maybe you used to smoke, and vaping was your way of breaking that habit. Now you find yourself completely caught up in a new one.

This page explains why vaping is so hard to shake, and how my quit vaping program works.

Clem Kelleher, Clinical Hypnotherapist and Psychologist (MSc Psychology). In person in Limerick, or online wherever you are.

Does this sound like you?

  • The vape is in your hand all day. You only put it down to eat or when work makes you
  • You're always checking: is it charged? Have I got a backup? Have I enough juice?
  • Going away means packing chargers, spare devices and extra liquid
  • You switched to vaping to quit smoking, and now you can't quit vaping
  • You've tried cutting down or lower strengths, and you end up back where you started

If two or three of those are familiar, keep reading.

Why vaping can be stickier than smoking

Vaping may not be as harmful as smoking, but it isn't harmless. And in one way it can be harder to stop.

A smoker who has 20 cigarettes a day has to stop 20 times, leave wherever they are, and make time for each one. With vaping, you never have to leave the room. At home you can vape whenever you like. It's always there, always in your hand, and it becomes part of the fabric of your life. Apart from eating, and maybe work, it's with you through everything. And if you work from home, there's barely a break at all.

The vape also gives you something, whether you like to admit it or not. Like a soother for adults, it helps you handle stress, pressure, worry, boredom and agitation. That's ultimately why you keep reaching for it.

So if you've been vaping for a few years, it has been part of almost everything you've done in those years. That's why stopping can feel so much bigger than you expect.

How the quit vaping program works

Three parts: a video, one main session, and a follow-up session.

1. A 20-minute video, before we meet

I send you a video to watch at home. You'll notice it's about smoking. That's deliberate.

Some of it will be familiar and some of it won't. Even if you've never smoked, most of it will make sense to you. Just take it in.

At the session, I'll show you how relevant it is to vaping. It tends to surprise people.

2. One main session, 60 minutes

We focus on changing how you feel about vaping.

Using hypnosis, we bring more information into your mind so that the feeling for quitting becomes much stronger than the feeling for vaping. When that happens, not vaping is what you do afterwards.

3. A follow-up session, any time within 12 months

If you are struggling in any way after the main session, whether that's days, weeks or months later, come straight back. Do that even if you haven't vaped.

We find out what you're struggling with and help your mind create a new solution that doesn't involve vaping.

Why the follow-up matters

Breaking the habit doesn't remove the stresses the vape used to help you with. They will still come up. Coming back early, as soon as you notice you're struggling, is the best way to make sure you don't just stop vaping, but stay stopped.

What clients say

From clients who stopped smoking with the same program.

“I smoked forty a day for over twenty years and I haven't touched a cigarette for a year this September. When I'm with friends who smoke it doesn't bother me. It's like I never smoked before. It's just not relevant to me anymore.”

– M.Mc.

“We were buying 10 packs a week between us. We're just back from a week in the south of France, largely financed by the money that we saved from not smoking. Best deal we ever made!”

– Cath & Dave, Ennis, Co. Clare

Questions people ask

I've never smoked. Is this still for me?

Yes. Plenty of people come to me who started on vapes and never smoked a cigarette. The habit works the same way, and so does the program.

I used vaping to stop smoking. Will I go back to cigarettes?

The aim is to be free of both. And if you feel yourself struggling at any point, the follow-up session is there for exactly that.

Is it really just one session?

The program is built around one main 60-minute session. You watch a 20-minute video beforehand, and a follow-up session is included for any time in the following 12 months, if you need it.

Should I come back even if I haven't vaped?

Yes. If you are struggling in any way, come straight back, even if you haven't picked up the vape. Dealing with it early is the best way to stay off it long term.

Will I be in control during hypnosis?

Yes. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention, a bit like being absorbed in a film. You hear everything, you remember it, and you can stop at any point.

Can I do this online?

Yes. Online and in-person sessions work the same way, wherever you are. I'll send you simple instructions for setting up at home.

Ready to put the vape down for good?

Send me a message on WhatsApp and I'll send you the video to watch before we meet. I reply myself.
